The Living Room

In designing this room, its function was at the forefront of our minds. We believe that the living room should be more than a place for entertaining-it should be a place for living. It should be a timeless oasis where one can retreat from the stresses of everyday life.

Taking our cue from the serenity that the outdoors inspires, our color palette relies upon tones found in nature to evoke a similar feeling of calm. Neutral upholstered furniture adds to the versatility of the room, functioning as the backdrop for-rather than the focus of-the room's activities and occupants. Gilded accents on smaller pieces give the room a quiet elegance without detracting from its tranquility. Through incorporating specific antiques, classic reproductions and contemporary upholstered pieces we have created a sense of timelessness in this gracious living room.

Biography

Mollie Johnson, educated in both the fine arts and design, has spent the past fourteen years as the head of her own Boston-area design firm, Mollie Johnson Interiors. Currently based in Wellesley, MA, Johnson traces the influences of her aesthetic to her worldly background. Having spent her childhood in Paris and Berlin and her adolescence in Charleston, South Carolina, Johnson's style is rooted in her Southern heritage and refined by her European upbringing.

Understated and sophisticated, her interiors inspire effortless living. Adhering to her philosophy that a home should be a reflection of its inhabitants, Johnson makes her selections with an eye to her clients' particular needs and desires. With equal focus on the beauty and simplicity of the design as a whole, she ultimately creates inviting homes that evoke a classic elegance and speak to the character of her individual clients.

Primarily working in collaboration with architects on high-end residential new constructions and large renovations, Johnson's projects – while chiefly confined to the Boston area, Cape Cod and Nantucket – have also included homes in New Hampshire, Connecticut, New Jersey, Florida and Kiawah Island, South Carolina. Her designs have been published in Beautiful Homes, House Beautiful, Kitchen & Bath Ideas, Boston Magazine, Cybele, Wellesley Weston Magazine and Charleston Home and have appeared on HGTV.
